This is a sample of the Primary School Leaving Certificate we received in 1979. Life was simple then, no T-scores!
Students who were stronger in a subject helped those weaker ones. Our school was what someone described a “kampung” school. Many siblings went to the same school and very often, our siblings knew the siblings of our friends too. Those who lived nearby, for example, in Toa Payoh, walked home from school together. The group walking home would gradually get smaller as they meandered from TPS along a path near Philips Singapore, along Lorong 1, 2, 4 and so on, till the one who lived furthest away in Toa Payoh was left. We formed firm friendships which helped reduce unhealthy competition.
